Renowned grassroots advocate and respected political figure, Hajia Mariam Dzifa Mohammed, has issued a powerful and timely call to action, urging government appointees under President John Dramani Mahama’s leadership to rise above complacency and arrogance. She also called on the president himself to take decisive action against underperforming appointees to protect his administration’s image and the future of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
Speaking with a section of the press, Hajia Mariam expressed deep concern over what she described as a disturbing trend of disconnect between some appointees and the people they serve — despite being in office for less than six months. “It is disheartening to see that some of the very people who were with us on the campaign trail, engaging citizens and asking for their trust, have now become unapproachable. They ignore phone calls, refuse to respond to messages, and decline meeting requests from stakeholders,” she lamented.
According to her, this growing attitude of arrogance is not only a betrayal of the party’s values but also poses a serious threat to President Mahama’s legacy if not immediately addressed. Hajia Mariam reminded appointees that the NDC’s return to power was not handed on a silver platter. It came through the relentless efforts of thousands of party loyalists who went door-to-door across the country, selling a message of hope and restoring faith in leadership at a time when public trust in politicians was severely diminished.
“To sustain the goodwill and secure the trust of Ghanaians long-term, every appointee must understand that their position is a responsibility, not a reward. They are there to serve — not to show off titles,” she emphasized.
In a bold and straightforward message, Hajia Mariam called on President Mahama to “crack the whip” on recalcitrant and underperforming appointees who are tarnishing the image of the administration. “If an appointee cannot perform, cannot pick up a call from their constituents, or attend crucial meetings, then they have no business being in government. There are many competent, loyal, and capable Ghanaians ready to serve. The president must not hesitate to revoke appointments and replace them with those who will deliver results,” she said.
She stressed that the success of Mahama’s administration will not only be measured by policy ideas, but by the commitment, humility, and accessibility of the people entrusted to implement those policies. Hajia Mariam urged the president and his team to always keep in mind the broader goal of consolidating power and leaving a legacy that will stand the test of time. According to her, this cannot happen if appointees are allowed to operate without accountability or a clear sense of duty.
“This is not just about four years in office; it is about restoring credibility in governance. The people gave us a second chance, and we must not squander it,” she concluded.
Her candid remarks have sparked widespread discussion within political circles and among the grassroots, many of whom feel validated by her call for better leadership, humility, and responsiveness from those in office.
