President John Dramani Mahama has made it clear that the planned Hajj Village, which is presently being built, will be used as a transit hub for travelers using Kotoka International Airport in addition to being a destination for pilgrims making their way to Mecca.
In response to questions over the project’s viability in light of the current economic climate, the President underlined that the facility will improve all travelers’ transit experiences at the airport by offering much-needed amenities.
The news follows criticism of the project’s necessity, with some doubting its timeliness and exclusivity.
In order to provide a more convenient and comfortable airport experience for everyone, the President reaffirmed that the Hajj Village is intended to serve not just pilgrims but also the entire traveling public.
“The facility aligns with our broader goal of ensuring fairness in national policies and making sure that all citizens, regardless of their financial status, can fulfill their spiritual obligations. For years, Ghanaian pilgrims have faced harsh accommodation conditions and physical difficulties before they embark on the holy journey.
“Under the Reset Agenda, the Ghana Airport Company is constructing a transit terminal that will be used as a Hajj Village during the Hajj period and as a comfortable transit center for departures. The transit facility will be available after the Hajj period for other passengers in transit through Kotoka International Airport,” he clarified.
