Haroun Apaw-Wiredu, the 2024 parliamentary candidate for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Fanteakwa North, has been appointed Deputy Managing Director (Operations/Technical) of Metro Mass Transit Limited.
His appointment follows the recent leadership transition at the company, where Mr. Kale Cesar Esq. assumed office as the new Managing Director on March 17, 2025.
Apaw-Wiredu replaces Richard Nana Osei Bamfo, who was appointed by the previous New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration.
Haroun Apaw-Wiredu is an experienced politician, engineer, and businessman with expertise in the mining and construction industry.
He holds a Master of Science (MSc) in Engineering Project Management from Coventry University and a Bachelor’s Degree in Education, specializing in Social Studies and Special Education, from the University of Education, Winneba.
Metro Mass Transit Limited, established in 2003 as a public-private partnership, provides affordable public transport services across Ghana.
The government owns 45% of the company, while six institutional investors, including the Agricultural Development Bank (ADB), Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT), Ghana Oil Company (GOIL), National Investment Bank (NIB), Prudential Bank, and State Insurance Company (SIC), collectively hold 55%.
During the recent handover ceremony, outgoing Managing Director Albert Adu Boahen formally transferred leadership to Mr. Kale Cesar.
He briefed him on the company’s assets, fleet capacity, staffing, liabilities, and operational challenges.
Adu Boahen highlighted the introduction of automated electronic ticketing and payment systems, such as the Icon Transport Management System (ITMS) and Tap n Go platform, which have helped stabilize salary payments and reduce financial losses.
In his remarks, Mr. Cesar pledged to continue efforts to strengthen the company, emphasizing transparency, dedication, and teamwork. He assured staff of improved working conditions and salaries if collective efforts enhanced the company’s financial position.
“We need to reflect on our organizational practices, review what needs to be put in place, and fix or reset where necessary,” Mr. Cesar stated, aligning his vision with President John Dramani Mahama’s governance approach.
Haroun Apaw-Wiredu is expected to play a key role in driving technical and operational improvements within the company as part of the new leadership team.
