Mr. Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Minister of State in Charge of Government Communications, remarked that the reduction in the number of ministers during the John Dramani Mahama government resulted in huge savings for the state.
Speaking at the Government Accountability Series on Wednesday, January 14, 2026, Mr. Kwakye Ofosu stated that the government has made deliberate steps to reduce public spending since taking office in 2025.
He claimed that the decrease in ministerial appointments compared to the previous administration was one of the main cost-cutting initiatives.
“Under the previous government, there were over 100 ministers and deputy ministers, all of whom were entitled to benefits such as four-wheel drive vehicles, saloon cars, fuel allocations, and either state bungalows or rent allowances,” he said.
Mr. Kwakye Ofosu pointed out that the previous administration hired more than 300 political staffers, which further increased government spending, demonstrating that the cost burden extended beyond ministers and their deputies.
“Beyond the ministers and their deputies, the previous government also had over 300 staffers, and all of that added to the budget of the government,” he stated.
