The Minister of Health, Hon. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has commended the efforts of Operation Walk Syracuse, a U.S.-based international medical humanitarian organization, for delivering free joint replacement surgeries to Ghanaians in need.
During a joint visit to the St. Joseph Orthopaedic Hospital in the Eastern Region, the Minister expressed deep appreciation to the team of volunteer surgeons, nurses, anesthesiologists, physiotherapists, and other healthcare professionals from New York who are offering free hip and knee replacement surgeries to patients who would otherwise be unable to afford them.
“This is a shining example of global health partnership and compassion in action,” said Hon. Akandoh. “The impact on the lives of ordinary Ghanaians is truly profound.”
He was particularly moved by stories shared by patients, some of whom had lived in pain for years due to the high cost of surgery. One patient revealed he had previously been quoted GHS 70,000 for a hip replacement, a sum far beyond his means, forcing him to endure eight years of immobility. Thanks to Operation Walk Syracuse, he was able to receive the surgery at less than 10% of the original cost.
Hon. Akandoh assured the team of the Ministry of Health’s full support to ensure the success and continuity of their mission in Ghana. He also encouraged them to explore the country’s rich culture and enjoy Ghanaian hospitality during their stay.
The visit by Operation Walk Syracuse has brought renewed hope and relief to many patients and families, reinforcing the power of international collaboration in advancing healthcare access.
