A hearing-impaired male student of the Mampong School for the Deaf in the Eastern Region has been sent home after allegedly assaulting a male teacher on campus.
The incident occurred on Wednesday morning inside one of the school facilities.
Eyewitnesses say it took the intervention of a police officer, who was on campus for an event, to rescue the teacher from the attack.
Although the immediate cause of the assault is unclear, sources within the school say the student has previously exhibited gross insubordination and unruly behavior.
The Mampong School for the Deaf, established in 1975, is the only dedicated Senior High Technical School (SHTS) for the Deaf in Ghana. Located in Mampong in the Akuapem North Municipality along the Madina–Koforidua road, the school currently enrolls 661 students — 460 males and 201 females — supported by 98 staff members.
Unlike other SHTSs that run a three-year programme, the school offers a four-year curriculum, with the first year dedicated to language literacy preparation. Instruction is primarily delivered in Ghanaian Sign Language (GSL), with programmes in General Arts, Visual Arts, Home Economics, and Technical courses.
The school also prides itself on employing 18 Deaf teachers, many of whom are alumni, to provide mentorship and representation for current students.
