High cost of sanitary pads and condoms are contributing to teenage pregnancy cases as well as sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) especially in rural areas, according NDC’s Prince Henry Tabi.
In a social media post on Friday December 30th December, 2022 the National Democratic Congress Communication team member in the Eastern region expressed worry at the current price hikes in respect with the above mentioned items.
He was of the view that prices of such sensitive items should be made more affordable to make it possible for everyone to afford them especially the youth.
Condom is currently sold at Ghc5.00 whilst sanitary pads are also sold for Ghc20.00 and above per the brand and quality.
Comrade Prince Henry is however, calling on government to put in measures to ensure prices of such products are reduced to deal with the alarming rate of teenage pregnancy and HIV/AIDs infections.

Cost of Condoms and Sanitary pads scare most people living in the rural areas.
And these are the places that records more teenage pregnancies and high rate of STDs . Cant we make it accessible and cheaper if not free for the rural folks?
As for the sanitary pads, the least said the better; now most teenagers, especially those in JHS and SHS level are using clothes as sanitary pads. Why? because it’s too expensive and people can’t afford. The same goes for those in the rural areas.
Sanitary pads should be free for teenagers. Condoms used to be free, what happened? Can we go back to free condoms to help reduce transmission of HIV and other STIs?
It’s sad when you visit rural areas: most families struggle to get one square meal a day, how then can they afford Ghc 5 worth of condom and Ghc 20 for sanitary pads?
The future is at stake because our future leaders might not live to lead the nation.
May God help and bless us all. May He grant us strength and prosperity in all our endeavors.
