On 17 January 1983, President Shehu Shagari deported around two million undocumented West African migrants living in Nigeria, the majority of whom were Ghanaians.
When oil prices plummeted in the early 1980s, leaving Nigeria in an economic crisis, the government blamed the economic downturn on the presence of undocumented immigrants.
The development led to the ordering of their deportation to their various countries.
Given two weeks’ notice to leave the country, or risk arrest and prosecution, many of the immigrants frantically packed their belongings in the durable chequered bags now known as ‘Ghana Must Go’ bags.
