Speaking at a Ministerial Roundtable during the 42nd Annual General Meeting of Shelter Afrique in Abuja, Nigeria, Works and Housing minister Francis Asenso Boakye pointed out that the housing sector has significant potential to help Africa emerge from the current global economic slowdown, and as such, must be prioritised by various governments on the continent.
The minister urged African finance ministers to adopt innovative strategies to secure long-term financing for housing development, as the current regime denies many low to middle income households from accessing quality, decent, safe, secure, and affordable housing.
He stressed that “As African leaders, if we refocus more of our resources on housing development, we will not only attend to a critical need of providing shelter for our people, but will also create job opportunities for our youth, boost local economies, and promote the overall economic growth and development of the continent”.
