Hundreds of residents in Ayensuano District of the Eastern Region have been displaced by rainstorm disaster.
The incidents which happened days apart ravaged many communities. It is estimated that about 600 people have been affected.
According to officials of the National Disaster Management Organization(NADMO) the first incident occurred on 21st April, 2020 which affected nine (9) communities; Docrochiwa, Kwaboanta Junction, Onakwase, Akokrom, Kwaboanta, Kwaboanta Ada, Ayensuano, Kofi Pare ano Agyeikrom.
The Ayensuano District Director of NADMO, Joseph Okai Gyan said, assessment conducted in the affected communities has revealed that “in Docrochiwa community, nine (9) houses were affected with total number of households affected being thirty-six (36) with no injury and death casualty. In Onakwase community twelve (12) houses with total households affected being fifty-one were displaced but no injured and death casualty.”
He added “Kwaboanta Junction recorded one case which was Islamic Primary School made of six classrooms with enrollment of one hundred and twenty (120) pupils also of four (4) teachers. The entire school building collapsed and has displaced the whole children if school resumes classes.”
He added that, Akokrom community, eleven (11) houses were affected with total number of households affected being eighty-three (83) with no injured and death casualty. Kwaboanta recorded four (4) houses being affected with total number of households affected being twenty (20) with no injured and death casualty. Kwaboanta Ada recorded four (4) houses being affected with total number of households affected being seventeen (17) with no injured and death casualty. Kofi Pare recorded six (6) houses being affected with total number of households affected being thirty-seven (37). Also two classrooms of D/A Primary School’s roofing was ripped-off rendered forty-five (45) pupils together with two teachers displaced.
He stated further that at Agyeikrom, “three (3) houses were affected with total number of households affected being nineteen (19) with no injured and death casualty. In all the cases recorded properties including personal belongings worth hundreds of Ghana CEDI’s were destroyed.”
The District Director said, on 26th April, 2020, another rainstorm disaster occurred and affected eight (8) communities namely Ayibontey, Otoase, Owusukrom and Krabokese, Teacher Mantey, Amponsahene, Abodzi and Govina all in Asuboi Zone. A total of Fifty-two (52) buildings were affected which affected 236 inhabitants.
Meanwhile, the Member of Parliament for Ayensuano, Samuel Ayeh Paye has donated 500 bags of cement and 40 packets of roofing sheets and nails to the victims of the first incident.
He is however calling on NADMO to facilitate support to the victims.
