Amin Mohammed Amin Adam, the former finance minister, has explained his position on the contentious betting tax, stating that he had to rectify a false statement made by the minister.
“I couldn’t ignore the mistake the minister made. If you know that betting tax is different from other taxes on lotteries and yet the minister equates the two, then I have to explain that the tax on lottery winnings was never implemented,” he said in a press conference on Thursday.
He claimed to have discussed the tax’s implementation in multiple meetings with the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) and the National Lottery Authority (NLA), but he affirmed that it was never implemented.
While the NDC pledged to do away with the 10% duty on wager winnings, he stressed that this should not be confused with taxes on other types of lottery prizes.
“Betting tax is not the same as taxes on winnings from other games of chance, and the minister should clarify that to the people of Ghana,” he added.
