President John Dramani Mahama has reaffirmed his unwavering commitment to ending illegal mining (galamsey) in Ghana, emphasizing that the fight is not one of convenience but of national survival.
In a post shared on his Facebook page, President Mahama stressed that protecting the environment is crucial to securing the country’s future.
“We cannot destroy our environment while claiming to build our future,” he stated.
He also commended journalists like Erastus Asare Donkor for their courage in exposing environmental crimes, often at great personal risk.
“For this administration, we are not just fighting galamsey,” President Mahama wrote. “We are also creating alternatives, including recruiting more volunteers for the Tree for Life Reforestation Programme and deploying Blue Water Guards to protect our rivers.”
Addressing communities that obstruct or attack public officials performing their lawful duties, President Mahama warned that his government would take firm action against such acts.
He further encouraged the youth to take advantage of new employment initiatives designed to provide sustainable livelihoods.
“Through the National Apprenticeship Programme and other initiatives, we are creating alternative opportunities for our young people. Let us choose sustainable livelihoods over environmental destruction,” he urged.
