Chief Justice Kwasi Anin Yeboah has stated that his office and the Judicial Council will not fail to mete out appropriate sanctions or disciplinary actions against errant judges or magistrates by the Constitution and the Judicial Service Regulations.
He said judges in modern society are not monarchs but servants of the people whose task had been defined and expected to perform those functions well and efficiently.
Chief Justice Yeboah said this at the 40th Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the Association of Magistrates and Judges of Ghana (AMJG) in Accra on the theme: “The Quandary of the Judge in the Digital World.”
The chief justice said, “Indeed, citizens will find it hard to accept the judiciary as the guarantor of law and human rights if judges themselves act in a discriminatory manner”.
On the 7th of January, 2020, His Lordship Justice Anin Yeboah promised the people of Ghana and his creator, to ‘faithfully perform the functions of his office without fear or favor, affection or ill-will.”
He recalled that during his vetting by Parliament, it was evident that the following issues regarding the Judiciary were of concern to the representatives of the people of Ghana:
The Integrity of the Judiciary and continuing perception of corruption, Delays in the Justice delivery system, Poor infrastructure of the Courts and Residences of Judicial Officers, Inadequate resources for the running of the Judiciary and Justice Delivery system; and Challenges surrounding Legal Education in Ghana.
“I want to assure the people of Ghana that I will continue to jealously guard the integrity of the Judiciary, as my predecessors have done, and will take all necessary steps to ensure that during my term of office, solutions are found to these issues of concern.”
Justice Anin Yeboah was hopeful the President, who is the leader of the executive arm of government’s pledge to support the Judiciary with the requisite infrastructure to deliver on its mandate, will be realized soon. The President, Nana Akufo-Addo gave his assurance by indicating his “willingness and preparedness to help address the infrastructural challenges to the satisfactory functioning of the courts”.
