The Inspector General of Police COP Christian Tetteh Young, has assured ri intensify police operations in Keanu Afram Plains area to deal with the rampant highway armed robbery menace.
The assurance follows a petition from health workers at the Donkorkrom Presbyterian Hospital, who on Monday staged a demonstration to protest decades of frequent and violent robberies targeting commuters, especially along the Ekye to Donkorkrom Highway.
In their petition, the health workers recounted several disturbing incidents, including the robbery and assault of a visiting family of a medical doctor on April 22, 2025, leaving one of the victims in critical condition at the 37 Military Hospital in Accra.
Another attack on May 28, 2025, targeted nurses traveling for a national health audit assignment, leaving them traumatized and seeking transfers from the facility.
The petition also called for the installation of CCTV cameras at strategic points and an urgent reconstruction of the deplorable road network, which has over the years provided a haven for armed gangs to operate.
The protesters warned of imminent strike action by all health workers in Afram Plains enclave including the only two medical doctors serving the entire area if authorities fail to address their worsening security situation within two weeks.
Noticing their concerns , IGP COP Christian Tetteh Yohuno assigned a senior officer from his principal staff to engage the petitioners and assured them that plans are underway at the National Headquarters, as well as the Regional and District levels, to improve security operations in the area.
The IGP expressed gratitude to the health workers for bringing the issue to his attention and promised enhanced police visibility, increased patrols, and other security interventions to safeguard the lives and property of residents, health workers, and travelers alike.
The Afram Plains enclave has long grappled with poor road infrastructure and limited security logistics, making it a hotspot for armed robbery attacks for nearly two decades.
