The Inspector General of Police, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, has visited Assin North today, Monday, 26 June 2023 to review security preparations for the approaching by-election set for Tuesday, 27 June 2023,
He is anticipated to meet with leaders of both the dominant opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) during his visit.
The meeting’s goals are to address security issues and make sure that both political parties remain in charge of their followers.
Dr. Dampare will caution both parties against taking any actions that would disturb the peace and stability of the region. He previously demonstrated his dedication to keeping peace during the Kumawu by-election.
After parliament notified the Electoral Commission of the vacancy, the Assin North by-election was called. After concluding that the Electoral Commission had broken the law by permitting Mr. Quayson to run in the 2020 parliamentary election without demonstrating that he had renounced his Canadian citizenship, the Supreme Court made this judgement. As a result, the court declared Mr. Quayson’s election illegitimate and declared his swearing-in ceremony to be unlawful.
While the NPP in Assin North has chosen Charles Opoku as their candidate, the NDC is supporting Mr. Quayson for the by-election.
The IGP’s attendance shows the commitment to ensuring a calm and orderly process as the election is set to take place tomorrow.
