Ing. Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, the former general secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has formally announced his plan to run in the party’s 2026 presidential primary.
His declaration was made just hours after the NPP launched its nomination process for a new flagbearer on Tuesday, July 29, in anticipation of the general elections in 2028.
At a brief declaration event, Ing. Agyepong positioned himself as the unifying candidate the party needed. He claims that he is the NPP’s best chance of winning in 2028.
He went on to say that his candidacy will give the NPP the integrity and unity it sorely lacks.
He made a strong appeal to party delegates to oppose inducements and reject what he saw as the rising culture of monetisation in internal party contests.
“Politics belongs to the grassroots, belongs to the ordinary people. Not the petty scabble of contented partisan elites. Let us not weigh down this party any further with a choice that will eventually call for unending efforts of reconciliation, reparation from hate speeches. With me, KAA, the NPP has a clear path to unity and victory. We need a pair of clean hands, a clear mind and a compassionate heart to lead our nation and the party. I, Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, stand ready to work with you, ready to rebuild, ready to restore hope for our party and every Ghanaian,” he stated.
Agyepong also made a noteworthy gesture by urging former presidential candidate Alan Kyerematen to rejoin the NPP, claiming that the party was established on “sacrifice, not privilege.”
Dr. Bernard Okoe Boye was one of numerous former NPP MPs that attended the ceremony.
Justin Kodua Frimpong, the party’s general secretary, declared that internal elections are set for January 31, 2026, and that nominations for the presidential primary would close on August 28. Prospective applicants must pay a GHS100,000 non-refundable fee.
Kodua also took the opportunity to denounce previous remarks that connected the NPP to the violence in the run-up to the 2024 elections and caution the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) against politicizing the existing chieftaincy dispute in Bawku.
