The National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) presidential candidate, John Dramani Mahama, has once again positioned himself as the man who can turn around Ghana’s failing economy. Should he win the general election on December 7, he has promised to implement drastic changes and carry out a comprehensive economic revitalization.
During his three-day campaign visit of the Upper West Region, Mahama spoke to enthusiastic crowds in Nadowli and Wichaw.
He focused particularly on the rising levels of youth despondency and spoke of hope, resilience, and renewal.
He characterized the state of the economy as grave and laid the blame for the past eight years’ egregious economic mismanagement on the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP).
Mahama claimed that the policies of the NPP had made many Ghanaians’ financial problems worse, especially the youth, who he claimed are most affected by increased unemployment, stagnating earnings, and a lack of economic possibilities.
In his remarks, Mahama presented a pessimistic picture of the health of the economy, pointing to high rates of inflation, unmanageable debt, and a weakening currency as reasons for the general dissatisfaction and hopelessness of the populace.
“NDC is going to come and fix the economy. So I know a lot of young people are losing hope. A lot of young people say, look, we don’t see any future in this country. And I can understand you. After what has happened these last 8 years, you are justified to lose hope in your country.
“But I stand here as the former president of Ghana and the incoming president of Ghana to appeal to all the young people of this country. You are my children because many of you are the same ages as my sons, and I appeal to you not to lose hope in this country. This country will rise up again.”
