Dr. Cassiel Ato Baah Forson, the minority leader, has reprimanded the government for approving one of the worst IMF programs.
He criticized the administration for first insisting it wouldn’t approach the IMF even though all indications pointed to a collapse of the economy.
The Akufo-Addo-Bawumia administration “signed the worst form of an IMF programme since Mansa Musa went on a pilgrimage to Mecca,” he said, when it ultimately opted to leave.
On Thursday, Dr. Ato Forson addressed a crowd at the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA) and mentioned that the government had signed one of the worst IMF deals.
“It is worth noting that this is the only IMF programme that came with a debt restructuring programme, in other words, ‘haircuts’- the first in the history of Ghana.
“These ‘haircuts’ programme has impoverished the rich, the middle class and even the poor.
“This same debt restructuring has rendered our banking and financial institutions insolvent, bankrupt and, literally, on their knees.”
The member from Ajumako-Enyan-Essiam called for the Bank of Ghana Governor’s resignation after criticizing him for some of the problems with the economy.
That was in line with the event’s topic, which was to talk about how the economy got to this point of weakness.
The Minority will demand the resignation of the Governor, his two deputies, and the bank’s directors during a protest march on Tuesday, September 5.
