Mr. William Boadi, the CEO of Educate Africa Institute has confidently addressed the topic of communication methods during his interview on the Bryt FM Adekyee Mu Nsem show with Kwamina Sam Biney, on Wednesday, 6 November 2024.
The CEO asserts the Ghana Education Service (GES) operates under the authority of the Ministry of Education which establishes educational policies.
He stressed that the new curriculum, developed by NASA and officially launched on September 1, 2022, has introduced stringent regulations that prevent teachers from speaking to the media without prior approval from the GES.
This policy has silenced many educators, with a recent study revealing that an alarming 99.7% of teachers in the government sector reported to be experiencing mental trauma”.
“Additionally, the 2017 law banning corporal punishment in schools has shifted disciplinary responsibilities to educational directors, leaving teachers to primarily focus on counseling students. This dynamic often results in uncomfortable interactions between teachers, students, and parents, who may challenge disciplinary actions” Mr Boadi lamented.
He was quick to add that, despite the challenges, teachers have valuable insights that could significantly enhance the education sector.
He indicated “The current climate discourages open communication, particularly with parents, many of whom remain unaware of their children’s academic progress compared to those in private schools. If teachers were empowered to speak freely about the pressing issues they face, it could lead to effective solutions and stronger partnerships with parents, ultimately enriching the educational landscape for everyone involved”.
