The Director of Finance and Administration at Ghana Education Service Directorate in Yilo Krobo Municipal Assembly, Mr. Seth Yaw Agyirifu has underscored the critical role of teachers beyond the classroom stating that the spike in teenage pregnancy cases in Ghana during 10 months closure of schools during the coronavirus pandemic shows clearly that teachers play a vital role in society.
In 2020, the pandemic prevented 12 million women worldwide from accessing contraceptives or family planning services, leading to 1.4 million unwanted pregnancies, the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) announced.
In Ghana, statistics estimate that 14% of girls under 19 became pregnant in their teens with over 110,000 teenage pregnancy cases recorded during the period.
Addressing teachers at a durbar to mark World Teachers’ Day at Nkurakan in the Yilo Krobo Municipality in Eastern Region, Seth Yaw Agyirifu said, increase in teenage Pregnancies during the pandemic is a clear indication that, teachers are very important in reducing such social canker involving teenage pupils.
He, therefore, called on stakeholders to revered teachers in the country and reciprocates their roles with the improved condition of service.
October 5 is celebrated globally as World Teachers’ Day.
This year’s World Teachers’ day was on the theme: Teacher Wanted: Reclaiming Teaching and Learning for Human-centered recovery”.
The Nkurakan Local GNAT Chapter under the auspices of the local chairman Emmanuel Dzramado organized afloat with placards expressing their various sentiments and subsequently held a durbar and games to mark the day.
Hadjia Ruckaiyah Issah, the Eastern Regional GNAT Treasurer called on the government to declare World Teachers’ Day as a national holiday for teachers in Ghana to properly celebrate teachers.
