The Interior Minister, Hon. Ambrose Derry has declared Monday, 25th May as a Statutory Public Holiday to mark Eid al-Fitr.
Eid al-Fitr falls on Sunday, 24th May 2020 but by Executive Instrument {E.I}, His Excellency, the President of the Republic of Ghana, by section 2 of the Public Holidays and Commemorative Days Act, 2001 (601) has declared Monday, 25th May 2020 as a Public Holiday and should be observed as such throughout the country.
Initially, 25th May was a Statutory Public Holiday in Ghana as Africa Union Day but it has since 2018 been made an observance Day.
Africa Day (formerly African Freedom Day and African Liberation Day) is the annual commemoration of the foundation of the organization of African Unity (OAU) (now known as the African Union) on 25 May 1963.
It is celebrated in various countries on the African continent, as well as around the world.
The First Congress of Independent African States was held in Accra, Ghana on 15 April 1958.
It was convened by Prime Minister of Ghana Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, and comprised representatives from Egypt (then a constituent part of the United Arab Republic), Ethiopia, Liberia, Libya, Morocco, Sudan, Tunisia, the Union of the Peoples of Cameroon and the host country Ghana.
