The Committee on Human Rights has hosted Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) workshop for eight Committees in the Legal Cluster and Committees on Education, Employment, Labour Relations and Pensions and Gender, Children and Social Welfare.
The workshop was on the theme, Promoting Human and Children’s Rights: The Role of the 9th Parliament of Ghana.
The inaugural session was led by the First Deputy Speaker Hon. Bernard Ahiafor, and the Chairman of the Committee on Human Rights Hon. Ernest Yaw Anim.
The Consultant and Former President of the Kenya Senate, Mr. David Ekwe Ethuro, highlighted how legislation, oversight, and budget allocation can promote human rights, while the Member of Parliament for Madina, Hon. Francis Xavier Sosu discussed the need for abolishing the death penalty and Ghana’s progress in doing so.
The second session featured presentations by Miss Maria Soledad and Mr. Mohammed Kheir on the United Nations Human Rights Council (HRC) and the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) mechanisms, outlining UPR functions and Parliament’s role.
Additionally, Deputy-Commissioner of the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) Ms. Mercy Larbi, discussed CHRAJ’s functions and highlighted ways Parliament can support its operations.
Dr. Isaac Annan opened the floor for the third session, presenting on Ghana’s UPR’s process, emphasizing Parliament’s role in reporting and follow-up activities. Strategies for monitoring, supporting, and evaluating UPR recommendations were highlighted.
