Fuseini Issah, the Western Regional Communications Director of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), speaking on Bryt Adekyee mu Nsem with Kwamina Sam Biney, has expressed grave concern over the destruction of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s statue in Sekondi, claiming it signifies a troubling era for Ghana’s democracy.
Speaking on Bryt 99.1 fm, Mr. Issah lamented that lack of response from the nation’s security institutions and civil society organizations on ongoing issues he attributes to supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
He accused the NDC youth of taking over offices and destroying state properties with no intervention from the police or condemnation from the President.
Regarding the pulled-down statue, Mr. Issah said, “We lodged a complaint with the police, but their response was far from encouraging. It’s disappointing to see the silence of security institutions on such matters.” He further alleged that the Member of Parliament for Sekondi Hon .Blay Nyameke Armah had a role in the incident, citing comments made by the MP during an interview. “For the MP to say he doesn’t want the statue in his constituency indicates he is involved. I urge the police to invite him for questioning as he may be inciting the youth to act unlawfully,” he added.
Mr. Issah also called on President John Dramani Mahama to intervene and ensure NDC party members refrain from actions that could escalate tensions.
“The NDC must understand that power changes hands. If we in the NPP decide to retaliate, civil society and clergy should not condemn us. President Mahama must call his people to order before it’s too late,” he stated.
When asked about plans to replace the statue, Mr. Issah expressed uncertainty, indicating that regional executives and other stakeholders are deliberating on the matter.
“I am not sure the statue will be mounted again, but we are waiting for the regional leadership to decide the next steps,” he concluded.
The incident raises concerns over the reactions of law enforcement in political discourse of the country.
