The Terminal 3 of Ghana’s Kotoka International Airport (KIA) was the recipient of two prestigious awards in 2020 announced by Airport Council International (ACI).
The KIA topped the ranking as Africa’s ‘Best Airport By Size and Region’ with a passenger population of between two and five million by the ACI’s Customer Experience Award.
The Terminal 3 of the KIA, which serves regional, international and long-haul operators, was also named the continents ‘Most Improved Airport in the year under review.
Airport operator and manager Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) broke ground on the construction of its flagship project (Terminal 3) at Kotoka International Airport (KIA) in March 2016 under the erstwhile Mahama NDC-led government.
The new terminal construction was completed in June 2018 and it was opened to traffic three months later by President Akufo-Addo.
The project is a part of GACL’s capital investment programme that involves the construction of a new terminal at KIA, the only international airport in the country, and the rehabilitation of other regional airports managed by GACL.
The two-year expansion at Accra airport was expected to generate 900 temporary jobs and 760 permanent jobs during the operations and maintenance phase.
The Kotoka airport handled approximately 2.8 million passengers and 46,996 aircraft in 2019.
