The Ghana Kidney Association has urged the general public not to underrate the damages kidney can cause when one doesn’t treat his or her health as a priority.
In celebrating the world kidney day in Koforidua, the association pleaded with Ghanaians to visit the hospital often and avoid self-medication.
Speaking at a public lecture on the theme, “For Everyone Everywhere from protection to detention and equitable access to care”, was the past president of Ghana Kidney Association Professor Jacob Plange–Rhule who revealed that, the main objective for the celebration is to raise awareness of the increasing burden of kidney diseases worldwide.
Also stated emphatically that, the 2020 campaign is to highlight the importance of preventive interventions to avert the onset and progression of kidney disease.

According to him, chronic kidney disease has no symptom and for that matter, one can easily lose up to 90% if the kidney functions with very few signs to show for it. Since most people have no symptoms until chronic kidney disease is advanced, early detection through regular check-ups is highly important.

“For one to avoid kidney failure, he or she needs to work out regularly and also increase physical activity. Also, take a healthier diet by taking more plant-based foods with less meat, reduce the intake of salt and also take less saturated fat”. He cautioned.
