His Excellency John Agyekum Kufuor,Former President has said “Knowing the number of a population is not new, rather an ancient thing occurring even in the Bible where Mary and Joseph went to their hometown to be counted and that was when Jesus Christ was born.
The ex-President cautioned people to properly check the identities of the census officials before allowing them into their homes to ensure their safety.
Speaking with Ghana Statistical Service officials at his residence at Peduase in the Akwapim South District of the Eastern Region, when officials went to get him and his household to count them, John Agyekum Kufuor said “To assert your right, you must be counted,” he said, adding that the nation must know the size of its population to facilitate governance and for the equitable distribution of social services. “
Professor Robert Darko Osei, a National Field Monitor, who is also a Board Member of the GSS, led the team to enumerate the Ex-President and his household.
The listing and chalking of an estimated 11 million structures started from June 13 and ended on June 23, 2021.
Chief Census Officer, Professor Samuel Kobina Annim, has warned that anyone who declines to be counted during the 2021 Population and Housing Census would be fined not less than 200 penalty units, equivalent to GH¢2,400.00 or spend 12 months in prison or both.
He said Section 54 of the Ghana Statistical Service Act, 2019 (Act 1003), had clearly outlined various offences and penalties for offenders and urged the public to cooperate with the census officers to prevent any sanctions.
