John Dramani Mahama, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer and former President,has declared his strong opposition to LGBTQ rights, citing his Christian faith and membership in the Assemblies of God church.
Speaking in a breakfast meeting with the clergy in Kofordua as part of his two-day campaign tour of Eastern Region, Mr.Mahama explained that his belief in the traditional concept of nature creating humans as man and woman, expressing clear disapproval of same-sex marriage and relationships.
“As a member of the Assemblies of God church, my faith is against LGBTQ. The faith I have does not accept same-sex marriage and gay and lesbianism,” stated Mr. Mahama during the meeting.
Mahama also touched upon the legislative developments in Ghana, referencing a bill currently in Parliament aimed at addressing LGBTQ issues. He highlighted the government’s stance, stating that the President would not assent to the bill if it incurred a cost to the state.
“There is a Bill currently in Parliament which is yet to be passed. But the government has indicated that if the Bill is passed, the President will not assent to it,” Mahama explained.
This news follows the broader context of parliamentary discussions on LGBTQ rights in Ghana.
On July 2023, the Parliament unanimously voted to grant the bill a second reading, agreeing to minor amendments proposed by the Constitutional, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Committee.
