A young head porter, popularly known as patapa, is fighting for his life after a tragic suicide attempt at the Koforidua Market in the New Juaben South Municipality.
The heartbreaking incident occurred in the early hours of Monday, November 24, 2025, leaving traders and passers-by in shock. According to eyewitnesses, the young man, believed to be in his early 30’s, had been visibly distressed moments before the act.
He added that the Kayayo had just finished delivering goods to a customer when he suddenly withdrew a knife and stabbed himself. “He looked very troubled. After he dropped the load, he stood quietly for a while. Before we realized, he had stabbed himself,” the eyewitness said, explaining that the victim had earlier expressed frustration about life and hinted that he “wanted to end everything.”
Panic immediately broke out in the market as nearby traders and customers rushed to help. In a swift response, a good Samaritan transported him to the Koforidua Central Hospital, where he is currently receiving emergency medical attention.
Health officials say his condition is critical but stable as doctors work tirelessly to save his life.
Meanwhile, the incident has sparked conversation about the emotional and psychological challenges faced by many Kayayo across the country. Several market women expressed sadness, noting that head porters often endure harsh living conditions, economic pressures, and deep loneliness.
Authorities in the New Juaben South Municipality are yet to issue an official statement, but some community members are calling for improved social support systems to assist vulnerable youth who migrate to urban centers in search of a better life.
