The Koforidua High Court has ordered for pregnancy test to be conducted before sentencing of 25 -year old Vera Asare ,convicted in a fatal acid attack on her boyfriend Daniel Omane,a 25 year old phone dealer wildely known in Koforidua as Anelka.
On Monday, March 2, 2026, Vera Asare pleaded guilty to manslaughter under a plea bargaining agreement reached between the Office of the Attorney General, the victim’s family, and her defence counsel. The agreement recommends a 10-year custodial sentence.
Although she admitted to the charge when it was read in court, the presiding judge deferred sentencing to March 11, 2026, to allow for a pregnancy test to be conducted.
Daniel Omane, a mobile phone dealer in Koforidua, suffered extensive burns on November 29, 2024, after Vera allegedly poured acid on him while he was asleep in his room. He was first rushed to the Adweso Clinic, later referred to the Eastern Regional Hospital, and subsequently transferred to the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital for specialized treatment.
After months of battling complications from the burns, he passed away on July 15, 2025.
Initially remanded into custody, Vera was later granted bail to care for the couple’s three-year-old daughter. Following Daniel’s death, she was re-arrested and formally charged with manslaughter.
Investigations revealed that the couple had been in an eight-year relationship reportedly marked by frequent disputes and suspicions of infidelity. Prosecutors indicated that Vera had confronted and threatened women she believed were romantically involved with Daniel.
Due to ongoing tensions, Vera’s mother allegedly advised Daniel to secure separate accommodation for Vera and their child in an attempt to reduce conflicts — a suggestion he followed.
On the day of the attack, prosecutors stated that Vera poured a substance later confirmed by the Ghana Standards Authority to be acid on Daniel while he slept. His cries for help reportedly drew the attention of his landlord, who assisted in transporting him for medical treatment.
An autopsy conducted by the Criminal Investigation Department concluded that Daniel died from complications resulting from the acid burns, leading to the manslaughter charge.
The courtroom was packed with relatives and sympathizers of the deceased, many dressed in T-shirts bearing his image and the inscription “Justice for Anelka.”
Family members voiced disappointment over the court’s decision to delay sentencing for a pregnancy test, warning that any attempt to manipulate the process with a fraudulent result would be fiercely opposed.
The matter has been adjourned to March 11, 2026, for sentencing.
