The New Juaben South Department of Social Welfare led by Emmanuel Larbi has done yeoman’s work for finally reuniting the mentally unstable lady who was carrying a child on her back wandering on the streets of Koforidua.
The department of social welfare rented a guesthouse for the young brilliant lady and her child, gave them money to buy food, etc as part of the process to get her trust and cooperation.
Before then, the lady was sent to the Psychiatric Unit of the Eastern Regional Hospital for medication which helped stabilized her condition.
The child was also examined and treated by pediatricians at the hospital.
A few days later, the lady started providing somewhat incoherent information which was decoded by the staff of the department of social welfare.
The lady had been admitted at Mount Horeb Prayer center in Mamfe Akuapem before hence the social workers followed up but her details could not be found at the prayer camp due to the absence of proper record keeping.
The Municipal Social welfare director and her staff also followed up on a hint by the three-year-old child of the lady about a school she was attending at Kotobaaabi in Accra.
Lo and behold, the information was accurate the social workers managed to get support to trace their family at Kotobaabi. They confirmed based on pictures available that indeed the lady and the child are their relatives.
The family came to Koforidua Wednesday, February 23, 2022, to reunite and pick them to Accra.
Obed Kojo Ansah, Journalist who has been following this story states that
“I observed that staff of the department of social welfare in New Juaben is highly committed to the work (they embarked on a journey to trace of the family during the weekend). However, the work of the department is highly inhibited by lack of logistics and inadequate funding. No official vehicle (they use their private cars for official’s duties), no designated center to temporarily hold people in such conditions”.
