The New Juaben Table Tennis Club has organized a successful maiden mini tennis tournament in the Eastern Regional capital, Koforidua amid coronavirus pandemic.
Following the outbreak of the deadly disease, all activities have been halted by the president of Ghana, Nana Akuffo Addo.
However, an indigene from Koforidua who is based in the United States of America (USA) happens to be a tennis star, Isaac Opoku popularly known as ‘Asaawa’ compounded this idea as he deemed it fit to assist the New Juaben tennis club as a form to keep their players active with the competition. He is the only Olympian in the history of Ghana when it comes to tennis.
The competition was for the players to be at their homes and exhibit their skills with a racket and a tennis ball due to the convid-19.
Forty (40) participants took part in the competition and out of the number, the Club decided to award 4 of them whom they think performed creditably well in the stay home tennis challenge.
The New Juaben Table Tennis Club climaxing the event awarded the top four performers with cash prizes.
The winner Judith Acheampong received GH₵400, runner up Emmanuel Asante GHC300, third place Irene Bamfo had GHC200 and fourth place received GHC100.
Again, the Club unveiled two highly standard table tennis board, rackets and tennis balls donated by three times SWAG table tennis player of the year, Nana Yaw Boateng ‘Abishi Lolo’ who is also a native of Koforidua but based in Austria.
Addressing the media, the chairman of the New Juaben Table Tennis Club, Felix Adjetey Sowah expressed gratitude to the financiers of the event for their unflinching support towards the development of tennis in Koforidua and its environs.
Mr Sowah encouraged players in the region to take their training serious while at home to maintain their form. He, therefore, called on Ghanaians to abide by all protocols amid coronavirus storm.
