A newborn mother, Mary Kakutey Dede, has been detained at Comas Damien Clinic (CDC), a private hospital in Koforidua in the Eastern region for inability to pay medical bus after a cesarean section (CS)
Mary Kakutey was referred from the Eastern Regional Hospital on January 5, 2022, to the Private Hospital which is located near Koforidua -Jackson Park.
The husband, Andrew Tetteh, a carpenter who brought the wife to the Hospital at 2:00am Wednesday, Jan. 5, was not informed his wife was going to be operated upon at the private clinic.
According to the husband, he was only asked to get a taxi at about 8:00am the same day to pick the wife in Labour.
A midwife joined the taxi; surprisingly they appeared at the private Hospital.
At 9:00am CS was performed on the woman who was delivering her fourth child (all three previous vaginal deliveries were smooth).
The private clinic issued a medical bill of Ghc5K for the carpenter’s husband from the village to pay.
The man has only been able to mobilize GHc1,500 hence the wife was detained.
Already, the husband has paid some minor bills including Ghc30 for burying of the placenta.
The explanation on why the CS was not done at the Regional Hospital is because of the strike by the certified anesthetics.
According to Management of the Eastern Regional Hospital, during the strike action, many patients in need of surgery were referred to Korle Bu Teaching Hospital while pregnant women in need of CS were referred to the Cosmas Damien Clinic.
Meanwhile, the Ghana Association of Certified Registered Anaesthetists has suspended their nationwide strike action effective January 6, 2022.
