Residents of Nyamekrom a suburb of Koforidua in the New Juaben South Municipality in the Eastern Region were stranded Thursday morning after a downpour.
A river that flowed across the Nyamekrom road overflowed its banks, flooded the road, and carried away a makeshift bridge constructed by the residents.
Due to the situation, cars could not cross the road hence many residents including workers and school children leaving Nyamekrom became stranded.
Assembly Member Enock Boahene mobilized the youth to cut down coconut trees for the trunks to be used to reconstruct the bridge.
The floodwaters also submerged many homes, destroying properties such as vehicles and electrical gadgets. No casualty was recorded.
Vice President Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia cut sod on October 27, 2020, for the construction of the 10.1 kilometers Koforidua-Nyamekrom-Supiriso Road in the New Juaben South Municipality of the Eastern Region.
The contractor after grading and constructing culverts on a section of the road abandoned the site and has since not returned leaving the road to deteriorate.
Residents believe, if the bridge is reconstructed and widened, and the river dredged, the flood situation will be mitigated.
