A breast cancer survivor Manye Yotse, has urged the government to include breast cancer treatment in National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).
This according to her will enable breast cancer patients to get the best treatment.
She said breast cancer treatment is very expensive which individuals struggle to afford hence due to financial challenges, resort to drinking herbal concoctions which worsen their condition leading to deaths.
This was made known during a breast cancer awareness campaign organized on Wednesday by Judith Awuah Darko Foundation in collaboration with Eastern Regional Hospital, Koforidua under the theme “the role of the family in treating breast cancer patients”
Dr. Isaac Sarfo Acheampong, a clinical psychologist at the Eastern Regional Hospital advised breast cancer treatment centers to adopt a holistic approach to treating breast cancer patients.
He explained that a holistic approach is when the treatment of breast cancer is not limited to only the physical aspect of the disease but with psychotherapy.
“Mostly breast cancer patients die and are not able to survive probably because of the psychological and emotional trauma that they go through which end them losing their lives”
He said the disease comes with lots of psychological issues which affect the patient and the family hence providing psychological support would go a long way to help in the healing process.
