The Electoral Commission on Tuesday, June 30, 2020, commenced registration of eligible voters for the compilation of new voters register across various centers in the country for the upcoming December 7 general elections.
Their decision to compile a new register came with a lot of hurdles from the opposition party, National Democratic Congress amidst multiple court suing.
But with determination, the EC finally won the battle to conduct the exercise for a new Voters register.
It is believed that the budget for this new exercise cost around 400million Ghana Cedis; hence many expected that the new card would have some new features that we’ve never seen in previous years.
However, Koforidua residents seem not to be satisfied with the new ID with most people describing the card as “substandard”.
Some residents who seemed not impressed with the entire outlook of the voter’s ID card criticized the EC adding that they expected more from them considering the massive opposition that surrounded the new compilation.
One Mr. Akoto said, “I think it should have been done like the Ghana card, this one if it falls into the water it will spoil.”
Madam Comfort Omane, Koforidua resident said, “They couldn’t trim the edges well, why?” or “they used the blade to trim it?”
“The design is not nice. We need to change the design, it should be a PVC card, not the old paper laminated way.”
“The card looks ‘cheap’ like the old ones we have seen over the years with a plastic coating which doesn’t last long.”
Some persons have also jumped in defense of the EC. One comment read, “It’s all about the QR code, once it’s scanned you can be identified. It is not about the lamination.”
This seems that Ghanaians are not happy with the low quality of the new voter’s card; they expected to see something more advanced.
