The Kotoku Task Force, established by His Majesty Oseadeeyo Dr. Frimpong Manso IV, King of the Akyem Kotoku State, to tackle illegal mining and its harmful environmental effects, is facing threats from prominent politicians allegedly involved in land-degrading mining activities.
According to intelligence gathered by Kotoku State actors, some government officials in the Eastern Region are seeking to dissolve the Task Force, which recently made headlines for its successful patrol operations in the Birim North District.
On October 12 and 13, 2024, the Task Force seized mining equipment and arrested multiple Chinese nationals and Ghanaians engaged in illegal mining activities that were damaging the area’s lands and rivers.
While many local residents praised the Task Force for its efforts to protect the environment, some politicians reportedly viewed its actions as a threat to their interests, prompting calls to disband it.
For years, mineral-rich areas within Akyem Kotoku State, such as Pankese and Amenam, have drawn attention from politicians who hold mining concessions there.
Some officials are said to control between 30 and 50 concessions, resulting in extensive environmental degradation, including deforestation, water pollution, and ecosystem disruption.
A source from the Kotoku State reported ongoing destructive mining operations in Ntronang allegedly overseen by a government official.
Despite the clear environmental impact, these activities have continued unchecked, raising concerns among the local community and Kotoku leaders.
The establishment of the Kotoku Task Force, championed by Oseadeeyo Dr. Frimpong Manso IV, aims to safeguard the land for present and future generations.
However, this initiative has seemingly sparked friction with officials who, as alleged by local actors, benefit from illegal mining.
“The Kotoku Task Force was formed with a singular goal: to protect our lands and rivers from destruction. Any attempt to dissolve it would not only undermine the government’s fight against poor mining practices but also prioritize the selfish interests of some officials over the nation’s well-being,” a spokesperson for the Akyem Kotoku State said.
As mining activities intensify in the region, political and business interests in the Akyem Kotoku State have intensified, with various factions competing for control of the lucrative mineral resources.
However, His Majesty Oseadeeyo Dr. Frimpong Manso IV remains resolute in his mission to defend the land and its resources.
