The Koforidua Technical University’s Department of Medical Laboratory Sciences is producing large quantities of alcohol-based hand sanitizers to help the fight against coronavirus pandemic in the country.
As of April 13, 2020, Ghana has recorded 636 positive cases of COVID-19 with 8 deaths. Out of the number, the Eastern Region has recorded 41 positive cases.
As part of the Corporate Social Responsibility of Koforidua Technical University to help contain the spread of the disease, it has distributed for free about 1000 pieces of the alcohol-based hand sanitizers produced to drivers in the New Juaben North and South Municipalities as well as inmates of the Koforidua Prisons.
This initiative has attracted the attention of the Ghana Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists to commend the University.

The Department of Medical Laboratory Sciences seeks to train middle-level laboratory professionals who have the required knowledge and skills to ensure accurate and safe diagnostic procedures at the laboratory and can undertake vigorous research to ascertain the causes, prevention, and treatment of diseases.
The HND Medical Laboratory Sciences is a three-year full-time program of study. The program is practically based, whose body of knowledge is grounded in the basic sciences and also supported by some core clinical courses and internship in hospitals. The program produces graduates who can efficiently collect process and analyzes biological samples of patients for accurate diagnosis of disease.
The principal courses that are taught in this program are Haematology, Parasitology, Histology, Chemical Pathology, Microbiology, Virology, and Histo-pathology.
