Kumasi, [Kejetia] – The Kumasi City Market Traders Union has outlined and initiated practical measures to protect the market facility against any possible fire outbreak in the wake of several reported market fire outbreaks in parts of the country.
The union, which is the biggest umbrella for most of the traders in the Kumasi City Market, wishes to express its sympathy and unflinching support to all the victims of the recent fire incidents in Techiman and other affected markets.
“We stand in solidarity with our fellow traders and market stakeholders and again share their pain and loss.
As traders, we are concerned about the importance of safety in our market environment and the executives of the union is being proactive to ensure the Kumasi City Market, being the biggest and busiest market in Ghana is not taken by surprise through accident or arson thus ensuring the provision of adequate security to protect traders, customers, and goods.
In the wake of this, the union has formally written to and engaged the Ashanti Regional Police Command to roll out measures to curb any arson in the market. In view of this, the police command has beefed up police patrols around the market enclave and has advised traders to close and leave the market space by 7 pm to allow them to monitor and identify prospective criminals for immediate action.
The safety and security of our traders, customers, and goods are of utmost importance to us. We believe that a secure market environment is essential for the growth and development of our businesses and the local economy.
We also call on traders and other stakeholders in the market to be vigilant in a look out for suspicious characters in the market as well as doing away with actions that have the potency of causing fire outbreaks. Finally, we are therefore entreating the Ghana National Fire Service to augment education on fire outbreaks in the market to forewarn traders to influence attitudinal change.
