The New Patriotic Party (NPP), among other offenses, is being accused of vote buying by Kwasi Amankwaa, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate for parliament in the Kumawu by-election.
Mr. Amankwaa is concerned that some elderly and mentally ill people are being transported to polling places to cast their ballots.
“It is very pathetic that the NPP have to resort to buying votes and then sharing money and pretending for these people to come and tell the EC that they are disabled,” he told Media General’s Ibrahim Abubakar in an interview while visiting some voting centers Tuesday, May 23.
“So they escort them to come and vote for the NPP.”
He claimed to have brought the issue up with the police and the Ghanaian Electoral Commission (EC) in order to seek restitution.
“If somebody is unfortunately disabled, we can all see. These persons that are challenged [and] now at this point they are telling me they are mentally deranged, they can’t even remember what they want to do. If somebody is not mentally sound, they are not supposed to vote.” he stated emphatically.
