Election results gathered by mybrytfmonline.com from the Kumawu Constituency of the Ashanti Region since 1996 Parliamentary elections indicate that the highest votes for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is 21,794 in the and National Democratic Congress (NDC) is 9,354.
The two leading Political Parties, NPP and NDC had not been able to increase their votes in the Parliamentary Election since the record in 1996 and 2016 and the seat is occupied by the NPP since 1996.
In the 1996 Parliamentary election,NPP’s candidate,Reo Addai Basoah won the seat with 15,025 votes, representing while NDC’s candidate,Jargisu Ibrahim polled 9,354 votes, and Ernerst Boakye Yiadom also had 532 votes for the PNC.
Reo Addai Basoah won the seat again in the year 2000 but his votes reduced from 15,000+ to 13,554 while NDC’s candidate Kwame Adu had 6,057 votes.
Mr. Kingsford O. Boateng contested as Independent candidate and polled 3,129 votes while the CPP,PNC,NRP and UGM candidates who were in the race polled below 300 votes in the Parliamentary Election.
New Patriotic Party in the year 2004 brought Mr. Yaw Baah as their candidate and he once again won the seat with an increase of vote from 13,000 to 19,223 representing while Mr. George Amankwa,the NDC’s candidate also polled 5,680 votes. Other Parties were GCP,CPP and the Independent candidate, Patrick Osei Aboagye who also had 187, 1,831 and 566 votes respectively.
The NPP retained Mr. Yaw Baah as their candidate in 2008 and he won the seat again but reduced the Party’s votes from 19,000 to 15,217 votes while the NDC also brought new candidate,Ohene Kwasi Agyeman who polled 4,278 votes, and
Mr. Dominic Oteng, Independent candidate polled 7,120 votes, CPP’s Kofi Adu Poku had 199 votes and DFP candidate, Yaw Opoku Mensah had 174 votes.
Honourable Philip Basoah who died recently as member of Parliament was elected as candidate for the NPP in 2012 and won the Parliamentary seat with an increase of vote from 15,000 to 18,858 and Mr.Asiamah Samuel polled 4,142 for NDC while one Independent candidate,Mr. Dominic Oteng who was the NDC’s 2008 candidate also had 3,991 votes. Other candidates were Collins Kumi Boateng for the PPP and he polled 301 votes, PNC’s Asante Isaac had 53 votes but NDP and CPP candidates had zero.
For the first time in history for the NPP in Kumawu Constituency, the late MP, Mr. Philip Basoah who was considered as candidate again in 2016 increased the Party’s vote from 13,000 to 21,794 votes representing 78.17% in total votes cast.
Mr. Emmanuel William Amoako also polled 5,899 votes for the NDC and Mr. Opoku Kyei Clifford had 188 for CPP.
In the year 2020, one member of the NPP, Mr. Duah Kwaku contested as Independent candidate and had 11,698 votes but the late MP, Honourable Philip Basoah managed to win the seat for the NPP with 14,950 votes while the NDC candidate, Bernard Opoku Marfo had 2,439 votes and GUM candidate,Nana Amoako had 174 votes.

Parliament, before adjourning sine die for the Easter holidays in 2023 notified the EC of the need to conduct a by-election in the Kumawu Constituency following the death of Philip Basoah, the NPP MP for the area.
Mr Basoah, 53, was a Member of the Seventh and Eighth Parliaments of the Fourth Republic.
The New Patriotic Party (NPP) candidate, Ernest Yaw Anim, is the number one on the ballot paper; the National Democratic Congress candidate, Kwasi Amankwa, takes the second spot while the third and fourth positions are for two independent candidates who bear the same name for the by-election on Tuesday,23rd May 2023.
The Electoral Commission (EC) has assured all stakeholders in the upcoming Kumawu by-election in the Ashanti Region that the electoral management body is adequately prepared to conduct the elections as mandated.
