The Moderator of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, Rt. Rev. Dr. Abraham Nana Opare Kwakye, has called on Ghanaians to reject any political parties or candidates who engage in vote-buying tactics ahead of the upcoming elections.
He made this appeal during the 24th General Assembly of the Church, held at the Ramseyer Training Centre in Abetifi, Kwahu, in the Eastern Region.
Addressing the assembly, Rt. Rev. Dr. Opare Kwakye expressed concern over the increasingly polarized political environment, dominated by the two major parties, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
He warned that the use of dubious means to secure votes threatens the integrity of Ghana’s elections and could result in governance by individuals with questionable intentions.
The Moderator urged the electorate to make informed choices by voting for candidates who prioritize national development over personal gain. He emphasized that rejecting venality is crucial for the future of the nation.
In his address, the Moderator also touched on the issue of corruption, highlighting the failure of successive governments to address Ghana’s poor performance on the Corruption Perception Index. Referring to the 2023 report released by Transparency International in collaboration with the Ghana Integrity Initiative, which ranked Ghana 70th out of 180 countries, he attributed the stagnation in part to concerns about the judiciary.
Rt. Rev. Dr. Opare Kwakye warned that the judiciary’s continued implication in corruption issues erodes public trust and could have serious consequences for the country.
He called on all stakeholders to work towards restoring integrity and trust in the judicial system.
The Moderator’s comments come as the country prepares for a critical election, with many hoping for a transparent and fair process.
