The Medical Superintendent of Kyebi Government hospital in the Eastern region, Dr. Nii Darku Dodoo has stated in a lovely epistle marking his two years in office in the facility that, he envisions the hospital to become a world-class model of “efficient and profitable” district hospital.
According to the medical superintendent, he foresees Kyebi Government Hospital running a specialist center with specialists in various fields motivated and practicing at the facility while having a diagnostic center offering affordable CT Scans, mammograms, X-rays, and ISO certified laboratories.
He said he sees the facility having a renal dialysis unit offering emergencies and chronic services as well in the coming few years.
Below is the epistle by the Medical Superintendent recounting the journey so far.
Exactly two years ago, I took up the mandate to entirely serve you. I must admit it has been a great two years, and I have loved every second of it.
Initial skepticism
When I was first asked to come to Kyebi, I declined because I heard a lot about the hospital and pressure from town-folks. I had started a big project at my previous facility, and things were just moving on well. I was so attached to the facility that when they heard about my leaving, the entire hospital decided to petition the Regional Director of Health Services. Their petition was rejected, and I had to move.
FIRST DAY IN KYEBI
I had passed through the town to Koforidua during my Kade days when the Suhum- Asamankese road was terrible. I had never been to the hospital before, and I did not even know the location.
So on a Sunday morning; I decided to attend the facility as a patient because the staff there did not know me. I got in and registered as a patient who had come for a funeral and had fallen ill.
That experience did not go well, and I knew “my job” would not be an easy one.
I visited there again and told a few staff that I was a physician assistant posted to the facility and wanted their feedback. Out of five people, only one encouraged me to come.
REPORTING TO DUTY
I finally reported at the hospital in the middle of October 2019. I then left to attend the Annual meeting of medical superintendents in Sunyani and returned to take over 1st November 2019 fully.
AMAZING TEAM
The first encounter with core management was a pleasant one. Everyone was fired up to give their best, and indeed, they have been excellent till now. I met staff unit by unit and told them my plans, and they also shared their problems. Some of which were immediately solved, most eventually solved with a few outstanding issues yet to be resolved.
The staff of KYEBI Government Hospital has been excellent these two years. Highly motivated committed and professional in their work.
Stakeholder
Stakeholders had a lot to offer, but we needed to be strategic to maximize gains from them. We deferred community entry and meeting the stakeholders. Our main task was to resolve the issues and let the feedback get to the stakeholders before we got to them.
This strategy worked because when we eventually met them, the focus was not on the challenges but on improving the hospital. We met several people who, in many ways, have improved the hospital, especially in the times of COVID-19.
Future
I see Kyebi Government Hospital running a specialist center with specialists in various fields motivated and practicing here.
I see our diagnostic center offering affordable CT Scans, mammograms, X-rays, and ISO-certified laboratories.
I see our renal dialysis unit offering emergencies and chronic services for those who need it
I see a world-class model “efficient and profitable” district hospital
Now
The main target of management was to make the hospital paperless. This was initially not possible due to the current upgrade. But the demands of the recent past meant we could no longer wait.
So it is important to note that on this day, 1st November 2021, exactly two years after the new management took over, we have achieved our main aim of going fully paperless.
Thank you to all who have made this possible, especially management and fantastic staff of Kyebi Government Hospital.
