The Deputy Minister for Lands and Natural Resources responsible for Mines, Hon. George Mireku Duker, has officially commissioned a Diamond Core Drill Rig, the Multi-Power Discovery II, procured by the Ghana Integrated Iron and Steel Development Corporation (GIISDEC).
This drill rig is equipped to perform both diamond core and reverse circulation drilling, making it a crucial tool for mineral resource estimation.
During the commissioning ceremony on Friday, April 5th, 2024, the Deputy Minister emphasized the significance of this procurement, describing it as a major milestone for GIISDEC.
The state-of-the-art equipment according to the Deputy Minister represents a substantial investment in the future of Ghana’s mining sector. He said the powerful too will revolutionise the exploration and extraction of mineral resources in the country.
Hon. Mireku Duker stressed the pivotal role the drill rig will play in geological surveys, particularly in identifying suitable areas for small-scale mining operations.
He stated, “The drill rig’s capabilities extend beyond iron ore; it serves as a versatile tool for various geological investigations, including geotechnical site assessments for national construction projects.”
Moreover, the Deputy Minister underscored the economic importance of the drill rig, noting that its utilization will contribute to national wealth and the mining sector’s overall share in lease revenue.
He emphasized saying “This is not merely a rig; it is an investment for the future—an asset that will yield immense benefits for Ghana’s economy and society.”
In his closing remarks, the Deputy Minister commended the management and team of GIISDEC for their foresight in acquiring the country’s first-ever Diamond Core Rig.
He expressed confidence that this rig will indeed deliver significant advantages for Ghana’s mining industry and society at large.
In his welcome address, Mr. Kwabena Bonsu Fordjour, the Chief Executive of GIISDEC, emphasized the multifaceted utility of the machine.
