On Tuesday, June 7, 2023, deputy Lands and Natural Resources Minister George Mireku Duker joined the Minister of State at the Ministry of Finance and Economic Planning, Hon. Mohammed Amin Adam, MP, Mr. Steve Manteaw, Co-Chair, GHEITI MSG and various stakeholders from the extractive Industry, to launch the 2020 Ghana Extractive Industry Transparency Initiative (GHEITI) report at the Airport West Hotel, Accra.
The deputy minister indicated that, “since we joined EITI some two decades ago, it has really helped shaped the legal and fiscal frameworks of Ghana’s Extractive Industry”.
Making reference to the 2017 and 2021 Resource Governance Index (RGI) as developed by the Natural Resources Governance Institute, Ghana Gold Mining Sector’s score rose from 56% to 69% within the 4-year period.
Despite transparency and accountability improvements within the sector over the period, findings indicate that, Ghana’s Oil and Gas revenue were better managed than the solid mineral revenues.
Hon. Mireku Duker also used the opportunity to call on all stakeholders to kickstart discussions on Ghana enacting a Mineral Revenue Management Act as we have done for the Petroleum sector.
He stated “On behalf of the Sector Minister, I assured the gathering that, government will implement all necessary recommendations which will seek to deepen our gains in the Extractive Industry while creating the enabling environment”.
