On Bryt FM’s Adekyee Mu Nsem morning show with Kwamina Sam Baney, seasoned legal practitioner, Lawyer Yaw Seberh, shed light on the relationship between political parties and the government regarding policy direction and implementation.
According to Lawyer Seberh, once a political party has completed its internal processes and outlined its final decisions or policies, the law gives the government no authority to alter or reject those directives. He stressed that the government, as the executive arm, is bound to adopt, support, and put into practice the official positions presented by the ruling party.
“The law is clear on this matter,” Lawyer Seberh noted. “When the party has concluded everything and presented its policies, the government has no power to oppose or change it. Whatever the party has agreed on is what the government must uphold and implement in practice.”
He further explained that this principle ensures harmony between party leadership and the sitting government, preventing conflicts of interest that could derail governance. Lawyer Seberh emphasized that it also strengthens accountability since citizens can directly measure a party’s promises against government actions.
The discussion, which focused on governance, accountability, and the interplay between political parties and state institutions, sparked broader debate among listeners about the independence of the government versus the influence of political parties.
Analysts believe Lawyer Seberh’s remarks highlight a recurring issue in Ghana’s democratic system—whether governments act independently in the interest of citizens or merely as executors of party manifestos.
