Early Childhood Education (ECE) plays a vital role in preparing children for primary school by fostering their physical, social, emotional, and intellectual growth. For this reason, the establishment of Kindergarten facilities across the country is crucial. Yet, in many communities in Ghana, access to quality early childhood education remains a challenge.
In the Kwahu South Municipality of the Eastern Region, there are about 63 established KG institutions. Sadly, almost all are in deplorable conditions, with the situation in Kwahu Obo community being the most severe. These poor structures discourage many parents from enrolling their children, undermining the development of early childhood education in the area.
Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Mr. Effa Osei Bonsu David, described the situation as one of his greatest nightmares since assuming office. Speaking at the Kwahu Obo Anglican School during a sod-cutting ceremony by a benevolent group, Fawohoma, to begin the construction of an ultra-modern KG block, he appealed for massive support from the public, private sector, and other stakeholders. He emphasized that his office is ready to partner with anyone willing to help improve social needs in the municipality, especially in the education sector.
He commended Fawohoma NGO for their swift response after receiving the request for assistance and expressed optimism that their collaboration with the Assembly would ensure the successful completion of the project for the Obo community.
President of the Fawohoma Group, Mr. Kwame Boateng, explained that the initiative to build a six-unit KG block for the Kwahu Obo Anglican Basic School was inspired by the dire condition of the existing structure. He assured that the project would be completed on time to serve its intended purpose.
The Local Manager of Anglican Schools in Obo Kwahu, Venerable Captain Kwasi Appau Attafuah, also described the current KG block as a serious challenge to effective teaching and learning. He welcomed the intervention of the Fawohoma group, noting that it would greatly improve academic work. He further urged school staff to ensure proper maintenance of the facility once completed.
