Hon. Joseph Makubu has encouraged people living with disabilities to engage in political issues to help them get political recognition and appointments
According to him, most of the people living with disabilities do not take part in political issues hence the reason why they are hardly appointed in political seats.
“I advise them to participate actively in political issues so that they can be acknowledged and appointed by the government”
Speaking in an interview with Abena Pokua Ahwenee on Dadi FM 101.1, he revealed that if they are acknowledged by the government through their good works, they won’t consider their inability as a challenge rather what they are capable of doing.
“If you participate in national issues and the government wants to appoint you there is no way they will overlook your capabilities over your challenge”, he added.
He revealed that it is true that people living with disabilities deserve more appointments in the government yet the higher positions in the Ghana federation of Disabilities organizations are not disabled.
“The problem starts with us when you visit the federation, the executive director, programs manager, and the accountant are all people with no disabilities”.
He added that, if in their organizations they can’t demonstrate the need for them to be in leadership positions then they have no moral right to request that the government appoints them or talk about it.
“We have to show that person’s living with disabilities is capable of taking up appointments and it should start with us in our organizations and federation”, he said.
He cited himself and some colleagues as examples of “disability is not inability” and therefore encouraged that they all do the same.
