The second African Union Reflection Forum on Unconstitutional Changes of Government in Africa themed “Robust Response, Deepening Democracy and Sustainable Security” has begun in Accra, Ghana, today, 18th March, 2024.
The forum brought together African policy and decision makers, Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), representatives of the Permanent Representatives Committee of the African Union (AU), Armed Forces of the AU Member States, officials of AU Commission and relevant AU organs among others.
The “Overview of the State of Democracy and Political Governance in Africa”, “Stocktaking and Accelerating the Implementation of Accra and Malabo Declarations since Accra I” and, the “Structural Drivers and Root Causes of Unconstitutional Changes of Government: Impact and Retrospection” was discussed on the first day.
Meanwhile “Sustainable Strategies, Tools and Solutions to Safeguard Democracy in Africa: African Facility to Support Inclusive Transitions (AFSIT) and AU Peace Fund”, “Effective Governance, Peace Dividends”, and “the Guardians of Democracy, Constitutionalism and Rule of Law” would be examined during the second day.
The President of the Republic of Ghana, H. E. Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in his opening remarks at the forum called on Member States to respect the constitutions of their countries, adhere to presidential term limits and organise free, fair, transparent, and credible elections in line with national laws and international norms, as well as respect the outcomes of elections.
He further assured participants of the full support of the Government and People of Ghana for their productive deliberations over the next two days.
