Liberian President Joseph Boakai has announced he will cut his salary by 40% to demonstrate solidarity with Liberian citizens.
His office says the president’s decision reflects his commitment to addressing the country’s economic challenges and promoting transparency in government spending.
President Boakai’s annual salary, previously $13,400 will drop to $8,000.
Government salaries have recently come under scrutiny as the cost of living in Liberia continues to rise.
Boakai’s decision is similar to the move taken by his predecessor, George Weah, who reduced his salary by 25%.
