The Lower Manya Krobo Municipal Assembly in the Eastern Region on Thursday shut down the Agormanya Market after traders disregarded directive on social distancing.
There was near chaos at the market center when the Municipal Assembly attempted to enforce the social distancing protocol.
Argomanya Market is the biggest market center in the Lower Manya Krobo Municipality patronized by many people particularly peasant farmers in surrounding farming communities and traders across many parts of the country. The market days are Wednesdays and Saturdays.
After an emergency meeting between the Leadership of the Municipal Assembly and the Market leadership, an agreement was reached that the market would be opened during ordinary days but shut during main market days until the Assembly is convinced traders have agreed to obey social distancing protocols.
The Lower Manya Krobo area is one of the hotspots President Akufo-Addo has said it’s being monitored for possible lockdown.
The Eastern Region has recorded 51 confirmed cases of Coronavirus out of national tally of 1042 as of April 19, 2020. As of April 22, the national figure has increased to 1154 but it has not been made known if case count in the region has increased.
Most of the cases in the Eastern region were recorded among construction workers working on the Tema to Akosombo-Mpakadan Railway Project with their camp in Kpong in Odumasi Krobo.
